Called featherlite, featherlight, featherweight, bubblelite, and bubblelight, the material of these brooches can stump people and create a lot of confusion. It is often classified with plastics, but is described as a meerschaum-like clay material. It was most used by the Japanese in the post-war period, usually in finely detailed floral items that resemble celluloid. It is another category of jewelry in which good samples are disappearing.
These brooches each measure 1 3/8" across, with a myriad of white petals. The shadow areas and central stamens are tinted with a black wash of paint. The backs show a little unevenness to the edges from the mold. Very good, clean condition.
The chrysanthemum is a revered Japanese flower. It is the official seal of the emperor and is honored in Japan during National Chrysanthemum Day.
